2009-2010 “Give it Up” High School Luncheon

On May 7, 2010 we held our 9th annual Appreciation Luncheon in honor of the 2009-2010 “Give It Up” High School Blood Drive Challenge. We would like to personally thank the Kern County high schools that participated. Throughout this school year the high schools came together to hold 62 blood drives, collecting 4,880 units of blood, and saving 14,640 lives.

We appreciate all of the students and faculty that donated this year, and would like to recognize the 2 winners of the 2009-2010 “Give It Up” Blood Drive Challenge.

Large School Category: South High School – 89% of the senior class donate

Small School Category: Frazier Mountain High School – 90% of the senior class donated

Kern high school donations make up 35% of Kern County’s blood supply, and for that we owe a huge thank you to everyone who participated this year!

The need for blood never dwindles, so don’t forget that Houchin is open all summer long, offering many chances to save lives and win big!! “Like” us on Facebook, and “Follow” us on Twitter to stay connected to Houchin and to stay up to date with all of the cool stuff happening these next few months!

We ask you to take a few minutes to watch a video we put together of some of the amazing students that had huge roles in this year’s high school challenge!!

Max Morris is Houchin’s Donor of the Month for May 2010

MaxMorris

Max Morris- Donor of the Month May 2010

Mr. Morris is part of Houchin Community Blood Bank’s 18 Gallon Donor Club! That means he has donated blood over 144 times! He began donating in 1955 when he was in the Air Force, and then joined the Houchin community while he was a firefighter with the Bakersfield Fire Department. Mr. Morris retired from the BFD after 30 years of service, and is now enjoying life with his wife of 48 years, Sandee.

What motivates Max Morris to donate?

He donates blood because it makes him feel good to know he is directly helping someone else. He feels like it is our duty to help others; that is why he joined the Air Force and then the fire department. He believes that others should donate not only because it’s a good thing to do, but also because they may someday be in need of blood themselves.

Thank you Mr. Morris for your commitment to Houchin Community Blood Bank!

Foster Care Awareness Week and Blood Drive

photoHouchin proudly partners for the first time with the Department of Human Services to present The Heart Gallery: A Gallery of Hope for the week of May 10th. The Heart Gallery is a unique photographic portrait exhibit featuring Kern County’s children, teens, and siblings wanting to be adopted. During the week long exhibit at Houchin, donors will be able to view these wonderful children who are seeking adoption. In addition, all donors will be entered into a chance to win one of the daily prizes being offered.

Houchin is pleased to be able to feature these portraits in their lobby to bring awareness to adoption and blood donation. No state has more children in foster care than California; in Kern County there is close to 3,000 children in the system. Please partner with Houchin and the Department of Human Services to spread the word about the importance of donating blood and the critical need for permanent families for Kern County’s foster youth.
