Saturday, February 12, 2011 is the last day to participate in the Battle of the Badges at Houchin Community Blood Bank, 5901 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. To celebrate there will be a Safety Fair from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and a free hot dog lunch beginning at 11:00 am. All blood donors will be eligible to vote for their favorite team: Law Enforcement or Fire and Safety. The winning team will have one vote drawn to win an iPad, courtesy of San Joaquin Community Hospital. Law Enforcement has been in the lead all week.
The Battle of the Badges was organized by law enforcement, fire and safety agencies in conjunction with Houchin Community Blood Bank in recognition of Burn Awareness Week to benefit the work of the Grossman Burn Center at San Joaquin Community Hospital. Burn victims often require blood products to heal. The Safety Fair will feature fire engines, police cruisers, ambulances and other safety equipment, and include tours of a blood mobile. A trip through the Safety House will help families learn how to avoid burns and other injuries and prepare for emergencies such as fires. The goal of the fair is to increase public awareness of how burn injuries occur so they can be avoided. The Safety Fair is free, and there will be balloons and other give-a-ways.
To make an appointment for blood donation, or for further information about the Safety Fair or Battle of the Badges call 661-323-4222 or log onto www.hcbb.com.
