The average adult has about 5 liters of blood.

Blood is made up of red cells, white cells, platelets, and plasma.

Red blood cells live for about 120 days.

White blood cells are your body’s defense against infections.

Platelets help your blood clot and stop bleeding.

Plasma is about 90% water.

Blood travels 12,000 miles in your body every day.

Your heart pumps about 1.5 gallons of blood every minute.

There are about 1 billion red blood cells in 2-3 drops of blood.

Blood types are A, B, AB, and O.

Type O negative is the universal donor.

Blood donations can save up to three lives.

Blood donors can give every 56 days.

Each blood donation is tested for 13 infectious diseases.

CRITICAL NEED

Review the information below to determine your eligibility for various types of donation.

Acupuncture

As long as your acupuncture treatment was performed by a qualified practitioner using a single-use needle under sterile conditions, you are eligible to donate. If acupuncture treatment was performed by an unqualified practitioner, you are not eligible to donate for 4 months

Age

In order to donate, you must be at least 17 years old or 16 years old with a parent or guardian’s consent.

Allergies

Eligible as long as your allergies are controlled (no headaches or breathing difficulties)

Antibiotics

Must be off antibiotics for 3 days

Antibiotics, for preventative measures (i.e. acne, rosacea, prior to dental work due to MVP or joint replacement) – eligible to donate
Antibiotics, oral for infection – eligible to donate after medication is complete and you are free from illness for 3 days

Arthritis

Osteoarthritis – Eligible to donate
Psoriatic or Rheumatoid – As long as your symptoms are mild and you are not on immunosuppressant medication
